Airspy SDR

Airspy SDR Receiver Nuovo

Airspy Hardware

The Airspy R2 is one of the best known SDR receivers on the market. It offers a continous reception range from 24 to 1800 MHz, which makes it suitable for analysis and reception of a large number of VHF and UHF signals. To receive the entire HF band (plus long and medium wave) an optional up converter is offered, which is perfectly tuned to match the receiver.

For applications with limited space, the Airspy SDR is also offered as Airspy Mini in a traditional USB stick format. The performance parameters are similar, just some components and features were removed due to space restrictions.

Airspy + SDR# = an ideal combination

The real capabilities of an SDR are determined by - how surprising :) - the software. The designers of the Airspy SDR are the same people who also write the SDR# (SDR sharp) software. Because of this perfectly aligned joint development of hard and software the resulting system can do things which are hard to achieve for other manufacturers. The SDR# software is one of the best known and most often used programs for SDR operations - for good reasons. It is easy to operate and offers intuitive operations for many functions. The open plugin architecture allows other program authors to offer even more functions, and the user can combine functions as his or her requirements demand. Due to the joint development of hard and software the Airspy and SDR# software are always perfectly tuned to work together.

Airspy R2 description

Airspy R2

The Airspy R2 receiver builds upon the widely used R820T2 tuner chip made by Rafael Electronis. In combination with a powerful 32 bit Cortex ARM processor and a fast 12 Bit AD converter, the Airspy can get much more out of this tuner chip than usual DVB-T sticks with RTL chipset. For example the ARM chip can process much larger datasets, which results in a wider spectrum span for the user. The Airspy can display approx. 10 MHz at a glance (9 MHz alias free). The Cortex ARM ship is also responible for the fast data transfer over the USB 2.0 interface.

The SDR employs a special clock generator with very low phase noise and a precision of ±0.5 ppm. The low phase noise helps to increase the sensitivity and dynamic range of the receiver. A very nice feature of the Airspy R2 is the possibility to inject an external reference clock. This can come from a Rubidium or GPS disciplined clock generator to supprt measurements with highest precision, or to correlate multiple receivers. Various GPIO port are available to control external devices. A bias voltage can be switched on to the antenna connector to supply external apmplifiers or suitable converters (see below).

Another important feature is the open documentation of the software interfaces (API). Even when you are not a software author yourself, you will benefit from this because other software engineers can (and do) provide extensions, plugins and own programs for the Airspy. For example you will find ExtIO DLLs or drivers for other operating systems. Also the firmware of the ARM processor of the Airspy is available in source code and allows own adoptions.

Airspy Mini Description

Airspy Mini SDR Airspy Mini SDR

For those users who do not need the advanced functions (ext. clock iput, GPIO ports etc) of the Airspy R2, or where space is at a premium, we offer the smaller Airspy Mini. This SDR is built like a classic USB stick and contains the same building blocks as the larger brother: R820T2, LPS4370 ARM CPU, 12 bit ADC, low phase noise TCXO. This results in about the same favorable reception characteristics as the Airspy R2.

Spyverter HF Converter

Spyverter HF-Up Converter Spyverter HF-Up Converter

Due to the design principle of the R820T2 tuner, the Airspy starts at a frequency of 24 MHz. If you want to listen to the entire long, medium and short wave range, you can use the the Spyverter converter. This up-converter is a perfect match to the Airspy receiver, but can be used with nearly any other SDR as well. The power supply of the converter is done either via the receiver antenna connector or the Micro USB connector. This independent power supply makes the Spyverter useable with any other receiver. The receive range is from 1 kHz to 60 MHz, the output is done from 120 to 180 MHz (up conversion). The IP3 value of the converter is an excellent +33dBm, additional filters at 60 MHz and 120/180 MHz reduce unwanted interference.

WiMo does offer the Spyverter bundled with the Airspy R2 as 'Airspy Combo' at a special price.

SDR# (SDR Sharp) Software

The SDR# software is made by the smae people who designed the Airspy receivers. Because of this joint development a perfect interaction of the two components assured. The SDR# did not become the most popular SDR software for nothing - even for other hardware than the Airspy. The program is easy to use, offers a lot of functions and can be extended by plugins. Especially these plugins are popular and offer functions like memory management, scanner-like operation or several data decoders. Of course you can also use external decoder software with SDR#. SDR# is available free of charge and can be downloaded on the website of the manufacturer. On the same website you will find links to various support options, for example the #airspy IRC channel.

Besides SDR# there exists a lot of other programs which can be used with the Airspy receivers. Please note that some of these programs require payment! Some programs are offered as open source software. WiMo can not warrant for any functionality of any kind of software.

The SRH-789 is a wide band telescopic antenna for scanners and similar devices. The adjustable frequency range is from 90 to 1100 MHz, the resonant frequency is set by changing the length of the telescope. Retracted length 20cm, fully extended length 80.5cm. A helpful table for various lengths and frequencies is printed on the loermost element of the antenna. The connector is SMA male, with locking nut, which allows the antenna to be adjusted in any position on the SMA socket. A knuckle helps adjusting the antenna vertically or in any other direction.

Bonito Loop ML-200

Mega Loop ML-200 ML-200 RX Antenna

The Bonito ML-200 is a wide band active antenna for reception of long, medium and short waves as well as the lower VHF band. The antenna is is characterized by a small apcking size, low noise and excellent signal levels.

The ML-200 consists of a flexible, braided wire loop with large wire gauge. The loop is connected to the amplifier, both are installed by hanging the wire to the wall, into a window, in a tree or on another suitable supports. The amplifier is supplied over the coaxial cable (not included) from a supplied Bias-T. This Bias-T has connectors for an external supply voltage as well as a socket for a USB cable. The voltage can range from 5 to 15 V. The USB connector makes the antenna very well suitable for portable operations with a computer.

Despite the high amplification, the ML-200 has a very low noise level, as comparisions to other active antennas have shown. The antenna can be used from long wave (9 Khz) up to the lower VHF range of 200 MHz. The amplifier has a very high 3, order intercept point of +40dBm. This results in a very high distortion free blocking dynamic range. The amplifier is protected by a twofold overvoltage protection. With this protection the antenna not only survives a thunderstorm but can also be used in vicinity to transmitting antennas, for example in the garden of a radio amateur or on a sailing yacht.

With the small packing size and the USB power supply the ML-200 is very well suited to accompany you in a vacation. For example the antenna can be easily installed with two suction cup holders in a window. The coaxial cables are not supplied because most customers require different lengths. WiMo does provide several ready made cables, and can also manufacture a cable tailored to your requirements.

Packing size 20 x 20 x 5cm, weight 480 g. Connector on amplifier: BNC, HF-Connectors on Bias-T: 2x BNC. Requires additional DC cable or USB cable for power suply. Supply voltage from 5 to 15V DC, max. 40mA.
