MFJ-994BRT
The MFJ-994BRT is an automatic tuner for coax or endfed antennas. The tuner is weatherproof and suitable for outdoor use. The max. transmit power is 600W PEP, 600W CW and 500W continous carrier (RTTY, FM). The MFJ-994BRT tunes antennas over the entire shorttwave range from 1.8 to 30MHz. The time to tune is max. 15 seconds, but usually as low as 5 seconds, becasue once found settings are stored in one of 10000 permanent memories.
The MFJ-994BRT works automatically, no manual tuning required. The tuning starts with a transmit power as low as 2 Watt, but 10 to 20 Watt are recommend for best results. The max. power while tuning should not exceed 20 Watt. Although the tuner is equipped with heavy duty 16A/1000V relays, they might be damaged when tuning at higher powers. The switched L network of the MFJ-994BRT tuner allows up to 192 dirrekt L and 192 different C values, resulting in an impedance matching range of 12 to 800 Ω.
The MFJ-994BRT is housed in a weatherproof outdoor box. The power supply is done over the coax feed, for that purpose a Bias-T MFJ-4117 is included in shipment. The tuner has PL sockets for the transceiver and the antenna, alternatively a wire post can be used for end-fed wires. For parallel wire fed antennas an external balun is required (not included).

MFJ-998RT
Similiar to the MFJ-994BRT (see above) the tuner MFJ-998RT is an automatic tuner suitable for outdoor use, but with a max. transmit power handling of 1500W! The weatherproof case is made of an ABS cover and a stainless steel box.
In contrast to the MFJ-994BRT the MFJ-998RT can match impedances from 12 to 1600 Ω. The minimum required transmit power for tuning is 5 W, but 10 to 20W are recommended for best results. Max. transmit power after tuning is 1500W PEP, 1500 W CW.
The power supply of the MFJ-998RT is done over the coaxial cable. For this purpose a Bias-T MFJ-4117 is included in the shipment.

The MFJ-993B is an automatic antenna tuner for coax- or parallel wire fed antennas. Integrated is a SWR and power meter, a switch for two antennas and a 4:1 balun. Impedance matching range is 6 to 1600 Ω from 1.8 to 30MHz. 2000 memory locations store once found settings, speeding up the tuning process when a frequency is later used again. Tuning starts automatically when transmit power is applied, manual tuning is also possible.
An analog meter shows SWR, further a LC display shows SWR, power, frequency and other information. Very useful for visually handicapped users is the acoustic feedback on SWR. Max. power load is 300W PEP SSB, 150W CW
The optional interface cable MFJ-5124I allow connecting the tuner to any Icom rig with the 4 pin tuner socket (e.g. IC-706, IC-7456Pro, IC-756Pro/2/3 and many more). Over this cable the tuner is controlled and supplied with power.
Equipment by Kenwood and Yaesu are connected with the cables MFJ-5124K (Kenwood) and MFJ-5124Y (Yaesu). Since these rigs require a somewhat more complex control the cables include an electronics component which makes them more expansive.
As an option a remote control MFJ-993RC is available for this tuner. This remote control allows the selection of the two antennas, manual tuning of L and C and of course the automatic tuning. Two LEDs show the status 'tuned' and 'hi SWR'. The MFJ-993RC comes with a 180cm long cable. This is a standard serial cable with 9 pin SubD male/female connectors. This cable can be extended to larger lengths. A maximum length is not specified by the manufacturer, but about 15 to 20m should be possible.

The MFJ-974HB is a true "Balanced Tuner" for symmetrical feeder lines which offers an excellent current balance. Tuning range 12 to 2000Ω, frequency range from 1.8 to 54MHz, of course incl. all WARC bands. Max. power 300W PEP SSB, 150W CW. Tuning is easy with three tuneable elements, selectable circuit "Q" for efficient tuning at high bandwidths or extreme loads. Includes large, backlit cross-needle instrument (selectable 30/300W) which facilitates tuning, it shows SWR, return power and output power. Size 19 x 15 x 20 cm.
The tuner MFJ-974B is similiar to the model MFJ-974HB, but does not support 160m. Tuning frequency range 80m - 6m.

Very useful product for rigs with built-in tuner. Most recent transceiver do have a built-in tuner, but those offer only a limited impedance range. This is where the MFJ-914 comes in. With the use of this tuner extender the impedance matching range is increased 10-fold, allowing to match nearly any antenna. No more problems due to component failures of the internal tuner. The solution for insufficient grounding in the shack.
