Amateur radio
Amateur radio connects the world
It is almost impossible to find a generally valid definition for amateur radio. Due to the diversity of this field, amateur radio is far more than just “radioing” as a communication technology. It has become a mixture of technology, experimentation, communication and competition. And that is also the attraction for most radio amateurs: a technical hobby in which - whether organized collectively or alone - everyone can find their place. But while many communication media and technologies are freely available, you need an amateur radio license for this hobby. There are around 80,000 radio amateurs in Germany. The majority of them are organized in the German Amateur Radio Club (DARC).
Living diversity...
Many hobbies are said to be diverse - but hardly any are as diverse as amateur radio. Being able to reach every corner of the earth or even just get as far as technical and meteorological conditions allow. Building your own telecommunications satellites, equipment or antennas. Try out Morse code, radiotelephony or digital transmission methods. Collect confirmation cards for radio contacts. Pursue sporting activities such as fox hunting. Taking part in competitions - or not... This is just a small selection of the entire spectrum of amateur radio.
