Vertical Antenna

Vertical antennas represent an excellent compromise between space requirements and frequency coverage.

Depending on the design, vertical antennas have a very flat radiation angle and are therefore ideally suited for connections over very long distances. Not every vertical antenna requires a large radial network - these are then particularly suitable for terraced houses or narrow gardens. Vertical antennas are available for many frequency ranges, in some cases they are also available as particularly efficient monoband antennas. The experienced experts at

FAQ

How long should radials be for 20 meters?
The length of <a href="https://www.wimo.com/en/catalogsearch/result/?q=radial" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" style="text-decoration: underline;">radials</a> for a 20 meter amateur radio band should ideally be a quarter of the wavelength, which is approximately 5 meters at a frequency of around 14 MHz. This applies to freely suspended radials that do not touch the ground. This length (Lambda/4) ensures optimal adaptation and performance of the <a href="https://www.wimo.com/en/antennas" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" style="text-decoration: underline;">antenna</a>. However, in practice radials can also be shorter, for example if they rest on the ground and are no longer resonant due to the damping. However, an <a href="https://www.wimo.com/en/accessories/radio-accessories/antenna-tuners" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" style="text-decoration: underline;">antenna tuner</a> is often necessary to adapt the antenna to the radio.

Do I need radials for a vertical antenna?
There are certain vertical antennas that do not require radials. These are, for example, vertical dipoles like the antennas from the manufacturer GAP. For many other vertical antennas, radials are an important component to provide an efficient electrical counterbalance. This counterweight represents the second side of the dipole, it enables a flat and complete radiation of the HF energy. Without radials, certain designs of the vertical antenna cannot function properly because they are part of the antenna system and help, without radials the antenna would have the wrong impedance . Especially for ungrounded vertical antennas, radials are essential to create a ground equivalent that ensures good matching (low standing wave ratio (SWR)) and efficient radiation of the signal. In short, if your vertical antenna is designed to use radials, then these should also be installed for optimal results.

What are the radials on an antenna?
Radials on an antenna serve as an artificial "ground" for many vertically polarized antennas. They consist of wire, mesh or metal rods that are laid out radially and horizontally from the base of the antenna. Their function is to form the opposite side for the RF signal. Without radials, the ground or ground plane would be missing, which could lead to impaired radiation characteristics and very poor antenna efficiency.
