AnyTone AT-D168UV handheld radio.

The AnyTone AT-D168UV is a dual-band handheld radio for DMR digital radio (compatible with ETSI DMR Tier 1 and 2); traditional FM is of course also supported. Unlike many other DMR devices, the AT-D168UV offers real VFO operation including a configurable auto repeater function, making it much more suitable for amateur radio than many other DMR devices. So here a radio amateur can set a frequency and the transmission parameters as usual, instead of being dependent only on pre-programmed memory channels. Of course, the AnyTone AT-168UV also has memory channels, in fact a lot of them: 4000. But you are not just dependent on pre-programmed channels. Another difference to other DMR devices is the possibility to change most (unfortunately not all) parameters on the device. So you are not dependent on programming on a computer for every small change. However, the settings for really all parameters (e.g. the DMR ID) are only possible with the appropriate PC software.

The AT-D168UV is the “little brother” of the popular D878UV. It also offers the option of storing up to 500,000 digital contacts and 10,000 talk groups, so there is plenty of memory for the complete list of all registered DMR users. Another function is roaming, which means the option of automatically selecting an accessible repeater based on a predefined list.

The D168UV is equipped with a wide range of other features. When used in analog mode, functions such as DTMF, CTCSS and DCS are supported, as is coding with two-tone and 5-tone signals. A tone burst (call tone) of 1750 Hz is also available. Two buttons on the radio can be individually assigned with functions, so each user can set their personal preferences. The 1.77” large color display can be illuminated to different degrees and is easy to read even in sunlight at the brightest level. In contrast to the AT-D878UV, the display has been upgraded, looks more modern and should thus ensure better readability. A bar graph is now available to display the signal strength.

Another feature worth mentioning is the option to store multiple DMR IDs. This makes it possible to use the device in a professional mobile radio environment, for example, and later in amateur radio with a different ID. Or multiple family members can share a single device. Unlike the AT-D878UV, the AT-168UV is not equipped with a GPS receiver and does not have Bluetooth. Position data can still be transmitted as a “fixed beacon”. However, the radio has a USB-C socket that can be used for charging and programming. In addition, a WFM receiver is also available for the VHF broadcast band. The transmission power can be set to 4 levels, from a minimum of 0.2 to 5 watts (VHF) or 4.5 watts (UHF). The headphone/microphone connection is compatible with Kenwood and Wouxun. The antenna connection is a recessed SMA plug, so optional Diamond antennas, which end in “J” in the product designation, can be used here, for example. The programming cable is included in the scope of delivery, and the programming software, which is largely identical to the CPS of the D878UV, can be obtained free of charge.
