Technical description ATAS-120A
The ATAS-120A is a motorised tuned vertical antenna for vehicle or stationary mounting. A motor moves a coil tap up and down and thus always tunes the antenna perfectly. The achieved SWR is usually always equal to or better than 1.2:1, a tuner is not needed.
The antenna is controlled either directly from the Yaesu radio, or with the help of a control unit that feeds the tuning signal. Only the coaxial cable is needed for operation, the tuning signal is fed through this cable together with the HF signal. The lower part with the motor is about 525mm high, the stainless steel radiator about 920mm. The total installation height is variable (depending on the band) and is about 1400 to 1600mm. Diameter at the bottom max. 46mm, weight approx. 900g, connection PL plug. For stationary operation, counterweights (radials) are required to replace the body of the vehicle. The antenna must be mounted on a solid PL base. A magnetic base alone is not sufficient to couple the antenna well to the vehicle body, further measures are required here (magnetic mats, cables).
Application description ATAS-120A
The ATAS-120A is the ideal antenna for use on a vehicle, or also on a balcony, on a flat roof or similar locations.Very conveniently, the antenna can be tuned exactly to the respective operating frequency from inside, with some radios even fully automatically.
The ATAS-120A is so robustly designed that it can also be used while driving, provided the mounting is suitably robust. A magnetic base is generally not suitable for mobile operation.
For stationary operation, additional counterweights (radials) are required; when used on a vehicle, the bodywork serves as a counterweight.
The following Yaesu transceivers support the ATAS-120A directly: FT-100D, FT-450, FT-847, FT-857, FT-891, FT-897, FT-991, FT-DX10 (with all variants of these devices). For other units MFJ offers the control unit MFJ-1925. For operation on VHF (2m, 70cm) the additional radial kit ATBK-100 may be necessary, also for operation on vehicles. For transceivers with two separate antenna connectors for shortwave and VHF, an optional diplexer is required if the ATAS-120A is also to be used for VHF operation.
