WIMO Expert opinion

The Baby-Loop is a small magnetic loop antenna for short wave. With this antenna, you have excellent coverage of all amateur radio bands from 40 m to 10 m – precisely tunable to the kHz, but also to any frequency outside the HAM bands, to also have a perfect reception of the SW broadcast bands or other services that you might be interested in listening to. The antenna requires very little space – the diameter is just 1 meter, a mounting height of only 1,50 m to 2,00 m is sufficient in most cases.
The complete Baby Loop antenna is made of aluminum, the tube has a diameter of 50 mm. Everything has been done to reduce any loss to an absolute minimum. Assembly parts are made of stainless steel, so that the antenna will be free from corrosion.
The tuning capacitor on top of the Mazzoni Loops is not a simple variable capacitor, but a huge variable plate capacitor with an air-dielectric. All single plates of either side of the capacitor are welded directly to the Loop and tolerant to high RF-power. The space between the plates is 14 mm. One side of the capacitor is covered by an aluminum shield and presents a kind of shelter for the other side of the capacitor as soon as it is tuned to 40 m. The actuator has a high value of weather resistance.
The capacitance can be varied by a motor on 1 kHz exactly and is adjusted to the best SWR by the unique control unit in your shack. In spite of their compact size, the antennas are resonant in a wide frequency range, typically over 2 bands or more for all Mazzoni Mag Loops. Do you know of any antenna which has a diameter of just 1 meter (ca. 38 inches), but a frequency range of 40 m to 10 m without gap? Take this one…
The control unit can either be operated manually from the keypad or controlled automatically by your transceiver. Enter the desired frequency to the keypad and the controller will tune to this within seconds. No correction necessary! The controller’s display indicates the frequency and the SWR. All is powered by a DC-power supply feeding 24 V/DC into the system. The maximum power of your transceiver should not exceed 200 W PEP into the controller, but a power amplifier put behind the control unit can feed some 400 W PEP to the antenna from 40 m to 20 m, and above 14.500 kHz even 1 kW.
When you decide for full or semi Auto Mode, an optional CAT-cable connects your transceiver to the controller and the tuning is done automatically, following your “travelling” over the bands. Two LEDs, one indicating motor powering, the other activity of the frequency synthesizer, show you the status of automatic tuning. When they are OFF, start transmitting. These CAT-cables, meanwhile 7 different, are available for Kenwood, Icom, Yaesu, Elecraft, Elad, Flexradio and some Chinese radios.
A super strong mast clamp for 50 mm – 60 mm poles are also part of the antenna system.
Note:
Some of the pictures show the baby loop with rotor. This is an optional part, not included in the scope of delivery.
