Charging EVs without annoying charging cables now becomes true!
WiMo - Product innovation - POWA22
Just in time for the Tesla production start in Grünheide in Germany, WiMo launches an innovative world first! The many years of development efforts of our engineers have created a product that the world has been waiting for - wireless power transmission! Teslas can now be charged without the hassle of cables.
Our managing directors already swear by the Power-Over-Air-WiMo Adapter - POWA22!
The system is just as simple as it is intuitive. For charging, the POWA22 is plugged into the charging socket of the Tesla (see picture). After activating the charging process, the vehicle is charged "over-air". This works simply by using nearby POWA22 infrastructure. The latter will soon be installed at Tesla Superchargers as well as Tesla Destination Chargers. Expansion kits for Tesla wallboxes will also be available in the fourth quarter of 2022. This will enable easy charging at home!
Both systems were developed and will be marketed by WiMo, the specialist for amateur radio technology. Based on the extensive radio transmission and antenna knowledge that makes radio amateurs so special, it has been possible to make power transmission wireless.
Having himself already tested several 1,000km between home and the place of work, managing director Markus Viertel says of the POWA22: "Finally, I no longer have to drag a charging cable around to charge my car. All I do is to park my car at my destination and the car is charged."
Now WiMo is just waiting for approval from Tesla and Elon Musk himself. As soon as this is received, we will be able to officially distribute our POWA22.
The POWA22 will be available for pre-order from April 8, 2022, and the first 100 pre-orders will receive editions originally signed by Elon Musk.
You can't wait either? Simply send an email with the subject "From now on, I'll only charge my Tesla with the POWA22 from WiMo" to [email protected] and you'll soon be able to stow the charging cable in the basement.
In a few weeks, we hope for release for the Ionity network. Talks on this have already been going on for several weeks and look very promising. So it remains exciting! Herbert Diess IONITY we will make Plug & Charge even easier.
Simplest applicability!
The transmission is based on a method similar to 802.11gn in the 2.4GHz range. Data can also be transmitted, not only power. The range is a little bit influenced by the environment, but can theoretically be extended to almost infinite. With suitable directional antennas, it probably goes a bit further.
We are working hard to extend the possibilities, both in terms of power and range. In the short term, the engineers have already been able to maintain several KW above 7as.
The small print
- The transmitted power is about 38aVA, max. current about 7fA. The max. possible distance at this power is below the accuracy of our caliper, we estimate it to be 0.4Å.
- If data should be transmitted at the same time: The data transmission is done according to the Marconi principle via quenching sparks, almost completely harmless and isolated in the rubber body of the connector. The data rate is about 45 baud (60% overhead, 8% useless filler data, 37% more frequent repetitions than 802.11bang).
- You should be scrupulously careful that no dogs, cats, small children and other living creatures get into the directional radio beam, it is best to block off a wide area along the entire route. For this purpose you could use e.g. copper cables, which you do not need now! Ingenious, isn't it?
- The overload protection is done with fusible links, i.e. in case of overload the antennas will melt at some point! A future version will have exactly defined melting points. We will be happy to supply replacement antennas then!
