Overview of the company ICOM
Today's ICOM (Inoue COMunications), based in Hirano, Osaka, Japan, has its origins in Inoue Electronic, founded in 1954 by Tokuzo Inoue, JA3FA. With the change of name to ICOM Inc. in 1964, the company specialized in the development and production of amateur radios and launched the FDAM-1, the first AM transceiver for the 6 m band.
From these beginnings, which are modest from today's point of view, ICOM has developed into one of the global players in the radio industry over the past decades, alongside other competitors such as Yaesu, Alinco and Kenwood.

Product categories
Among the outstanding technical achievements are the former development of the low-noise DDS synthesizer and the ongoing production of the D-STAR system, a proprietary method of digital information transmission in amateur radio, since 2002. In addition to shortwave transceivers, VHF/UHF mobile radios and high-quality semi-professional communications receivers, the product portfolio also serves the following product categories: A wide range of equipment for individual communication needs. ATEX versions and license-free analog and digital PMR-446 radios for private and professional applications, BOS and professional radio, marine radio, aviation radio, LTE and WLAN network solutions, as well as the rental of LTE radios. The digital PMR radio system IDASTM (Icom Digital Advanced System) consists of handheld and mobile radios and the associated repeaters. This allows the existing gap between analog and digital radio systems to be closed. The dPMRTM is an open, standardized digital radio protocol.
