How far can I get with a radio?

The range of an amateur radio device depends on various factors, including the transmitter power of the device, the frequency at which it operates, the type of antenna, geographical conditions and atmospheric conditions. On VHF/UHF frequencies (2m/70cm bands) ranges of a few kilometers to around 100 kilometers can be achieved under normal conditions, while with HF radios (short wave) you can establish worldwide connections under good conditions. Use of relay stations and satellites can also increase the range. Digital modes and network connections such as Echolink or DMR can extend the range regardless of natural conditions.
