What is UHF and VHF?

UHF and VHF are frequency ranges used in amateur radio. VHF stands for “Very High Frequency” and includes frequencies between 30 MHz and 300 MHz. This range is often used for local communications over shorter distances and in rural areas because the waves tend to travel in a straight line and can be absorbed or reflected by objects such as buildings. UHF, or “Ultra High Frequency,” includes frequencies between 300 MHz and 3 GHz. These higher frequencies have a shorter wavelength, allowing for improved penetration of urban structures, and are therefore often preferred for urban environments or for satellite communications.
