Which radio has the greatest range?

The range of a radio in amateur radio depends on various factors such as the transmission power, the antenna, the frequency bands used and the current propagation conditions. In general, shortwave (HF) radios have the potential to enable global connectivity due to the ability of ionospheric reflection. VHF and UHF devices, on the other hand, typically have a shorter range and are more effective for local to regional communications. Different operating modes such as SSB (Single Side Band) can also increase the range compared to FM (Frequency Modulation). Ultimately, it is the combination of equipment, knowledge and current conditions that defines the maximum range.
