Technical description

A cross yagi consists of two normal yagi systems mounted on the same boom and rotated 90° in position.

InnovAntenna's LFA (Loop Fed Array) yagis are extensively numerically simulated and optimized using special software. This includes the correct 3D simulation of the boom, the isolators, the connector and the cable. This is the only way to really achieve an optimum of what is technically possible. Great emphasis is placed on precision during production and high-quality materials are used.

The LFA active loop element consists of 4 segments of aluminum tubing, which allows the user to adjust the loop for the best SWR. All elements are fully isolated from the boom and are held in place by high quality UV resistant RF neutral isolators, which in turn are connected to the boom via stainless steel fasteners.

The LFA Low-Noise Yagi differs from conventional dipole-fed Yagis in many ways, with its main advantage being the suppression of unwanted interference. The LFA has a rectangular-shaped element driven by a full-wave loop, arranged flat on the boom between and in series with the parasitic elements.

An SWR of 1.1 or better is achieved in the 143.9 - 145.2 range.

The 5.8 m or 6.8 m long, four-part boom is made of aluminum box sections with edge lengths of 40 mm. Only the larger version needs to be guyed, all necessary parts are included.

Application description

The LFA yagis are suitable for all "weak signal modes" in the lower range of the 2m band due to the optimization for high gain and very low noise at the same time. So EME, Meteor Scatter, Tropo-DX, Sporadic-E etc. Despite the robust construction (the antennas can withstand more than 160 km/h wind speed!) the Yagis are still relatively light and thus suitable for smaller masts or for staking several antennas.

The LFA Yagis are delivered without balun, the coaxial cables are directly connected to the dipoles, as usual for such antennas. In this case the power limitation is 3 kW. With the recommended balun a maximum power of about 1.0 to 1.5 kW is possible. The antennas have one connection each for horizontal and vertical polarization.

Either both systems (both dipoles) are driven by one signal, but with different phase position, so a circular polarization is achieved. For this purpose, the X-position of the antenna is usually chosen. Or you switch a cable between both systems, then you have two antennas with + setup: a horizontal and a vertical Yagi. Of course it would be also conceivable to lay two cables to use both systems at the same time, or to switch only in the shack.

If one wants to have only a fixed, not switchable circular polarization, then cables of different length are sufficient, which are united over a 3dB coupler (splitter) on a cable.

If one wants to have the maximum flexibility, one can mount a polarization remote switch (see accessories) on the antenna. From this box, two cables go to the antenna, one coax and one control cable to the radio. The remote switch then provides the ability to switch between left or right hand circular polarization, or between horizontal or vertical linear polarization.

The excellent gain to noise ratio (G/T ratio) makes InnovAntennas LFA Yagis particularly suitable for antenna systems that are adjustable in elevation: That is, antenna systems for EME or for satellite operation. But even when used without an elevation rotor, the low noise has a very beneficial effect, weaker signals become much more audible.
