Technical description
InnovAntennas' "OWL Ultra L" Yagis are extensively numerically simulated and optimised using special software. This includes the correct 3D simulation of the boom, the insulators, the connector and the cable. This is the only way to really achieve the optimum of what is technically possible.
Low impedance Yagi antennas usually offer very good performance (gain, front-to-back ratio, etc.), but are very narrow band, plus the SWR minimum shifts slightly in rain. Not so with the OWL Ultra L Yagis from Justin, G0KSC, the owner of InnovAntennas. Due to the very careful and elaborate numerical simulation of the antennas with modern software, an optimisation is possible that was hardly conceivable before. In addition, there is the practical experience in antenna construction to design a really powerful Yagi.
The boom is made of square aluminium with an edge length of 25mm. The passive elements are inserted through the boom and insulated. The fed dipole is also in the boom in the same plane. The dipole centre is earthed, which removes static charge and protects the transceiver. Due to the impedance rising rapidly outside the 2m band, the antenna acts like a band-pass filter and also reduces noise in this way. However, the most important factor for lower noise is the greatly reduced side lobes in the elevation plane. The OWL Ultra Yagis have been optimised to have as few side lobes as possible here, which can easily pick up interference from the ground and from the neighbourhood.
Application description
The InnovAntennas OWL Ultra Yagis are suitable for all "weak signal modes" on 2m due to the optimisation for high gain with very low noise at the same time. So EME, Meteor Scatter, Tropo-DX, Sporadic-E etc. Despite the robust construction (the antennas can withstand wind speeds of up to 160 km/h!), the Yagis are still relatively light and thus suitable for smaller masts or for staking several antennas.
The OWL Ultra Yagis are delivered without balun, the coaxial cable is connected directly to the dipole as usual with such antennas. In this case, the power limitation is 5 kW. With the recommended balun, a maximum power of approx. 1.0 to 1.5 kW is possible.
The dipole has an impedance of 50 Ohm. The length of the dipole is adjustable, for example for cases where the antenna has to be installed close above the roof surface. In all cases, a very good SWR is achieved over a wide frequency range. The excellent gain to noise ratio (G/T ratio) makes the InnovAntennas OWL Ultra Yagis particularly suitable for antenna systems that are adjustable in elevation: i.e. antenna systems for EME or for satellite operation. But even when used without an elevation rotor, the low noise has a very beneficial effect, making weaker signals much more audible.
