The correct attachment of the end of the rope is highly important for
the longevity and security of the guying. It must be ensured that the
rope can not be frayed by movement and wear on sharp edges. In most
cases the rope is held in a thimble and fixed by one or multiple screw
clamps, most ideally with a double clamp. In addition to that the very
end of the rope should be protected against fraying (fan out) by using
another clamp or a cable tie or adhesive tape. The thimble can then be
hooked up to a chain link or a carabine. When the attachment point
itself is smooth and has no risk of fraying the rope then the rope can
be attached directly to the lug without using a thimble. But please note
that the breaking load of a rope is drastically reduced when tying a
knot, depending on the knot by up to 30 or even 50%! So the use of a
thimble is helping under thsi aspec tas well. Although the breaking load
is reduced also when using a thimble, it is not reduced as much as when
using a knot.
The mounting hardware by Mastrant is in most cases
made of stainless steel type A4, i.e. a steel type which is also
resistant against acid and seawater. This is not only beneficial on
board a ship, but also on land, for example close to the sea. But even
anywhere else exhaust fumes from chimney can lead to acidic
precipitation which can harm metals. Please select the size of the
mounting hardware in accordance to the rope thickness.
