10 Minuten mit dem neuen Icom IC-7610, Vorstellung von ein paar Eigenschaften dieses neuen Transceivers.

Technical description IC-7610

With the IC-7300, Icom was the first of the three major Japanese amateur radio manufacturers to bring a true SDR (Software Defined Radio) transceiver for amateur radio to the market. The IC-7610 is the further development of this successful device. It uses a high-quality, direct-sampling AD converter to convert the HF signal directly behind the antenna into digital signals. Further processing then takes place in a special digital component (FPGA, Field Programmable Gate Array). In this way, an extraordinarily high blocking dynamic range is achieved, which in the case of the IC-7610 is about 110 dB (at 2 kHz signal spacing). These good receiver characteristics are also supported by a precise oscillator that has extremely low phase noise.

The IC-7610 offers not one, but two independent receivers, continuous from 30 kHz to 60 MHz. Both are equipped with so-called DIGI-SEL filters. These work as a tracking pre-selector and have steeper edges than fixed bandpass filters. This type of filtering protects the AD-converter even better against overloading by unwanted signals outside the band range.

The transmission path is constructed in the same way: the modulation is digitised, processed by a DSP (digital signal processor) and the FPGA chip on the digital level and then converted to the analogue level, filtered and amplified. This achieves very good spectral purity and excellent phase noise values. The transmitter of the IC-7610 offers max. 100 W transmitting power and is equipped with a built-in SWR meter and antenna tuner.

Application description IC-7610

The IC-7610 offers two independent receivers that can also receive different bands and operating modes. Each receiver has its own controls for volume and RF gain. This also makes it easy to observe and crack a pileup in split mode by observing both the DX station and the callers on different receivers, possibly even with different filter widths.

The display is a touch display like the little brother IC-7300, but larger: 7 inches / 17.8 cm. A fast real-time waterfall display shows the reception range for each receiver separately. The width of the spectrum can be set between ± 2.5 and ± 500 kHz. This way, you always have the band activity in view, no matter whether you are waiting for a DX station or want to check in a contest if the band is already open.

The IC-7610's features are rounded off by a variety of functions for convenient operation: The Audio Scope shows the modulation characteristics and filter settings. All settings and memories can be stored on an SD memory card, as can QSO recordings with transmit and receive paths and CQ calls.

The connections on the rear panel correspond to the accessory and remote sockets that have been standard at Icom for many years; this means that existing accessories can be used without any problems. Two USB sockets offer further connection possibilities for a computer (CAT, sound card, I/Q data for external decoding...). The remote control software RS-BA1 can also be used with the IC-7610 and, of course, a Morse key and a linear output stage.

With a width of 340 mm, but a height of only 118 mm and a depth of 277 mm as well as 8.5 kg, the IC-7610 is still a handy device despite all its functions and transmitting power. The power supply of 13.8 V / 23 A may be delivered by a mains adapter, but also from a battery, mobile or on a field day or expedition.

Founded in 1954, the Japanese company Icom is one of the best-known brands in both the professional and amateur radio sectors. Icom supplies analogue and digital radio systems for marine, aeronautical, professional and amateur radio as well as satellite radio. With the IC-7610, Icom presents for the first time a shortwave broadband transceiver with an additional second receive channel as a direct-sampling SDR.
