Monoband-Dipole

Classic full size monoband dipoles (λ/2) are still the simplest and most efficient antenna. Depending on the height above ground, a dipole works as a NVIS radiator (low height, good for local traffic, NVIS) or as an antenna with low radiation angle (at least λ/2 height above ground, good for DX).

The monoband dipoles are made of flexible steel wire which is coated with transparent plastic. The antenna wires are fixed with stainless steel clamps, insulators are attached at the ends. The balun in the middle is a 1:1 current balun which tolerates a maximum power of 1 kW (SSB, CW). The connector for the 50 Ω coaxial cable is an SO239 (PL) socket on the balun. The length of the monoband dipole is long enough to be tuned to the lower end of the band (CW range). By shortening (flipping) the wires the SWR minimum can be shifted upwards.

Shortened Monoband-Dipoles

Kurzdipol Short Dipole 80m

Shortened antennas are used wherever space is limited and the full length of the antenna cannot be extended. Two essential factors determine the efficiency of shortened dipoles:

  1. Shortening factor
  2. Losses of the electrical matching elements

The mentioned losses were adressed by designing an as close to optimal as possible matching network with toroid ferrite cores with little losses. The shortening factor of c. 0.4 - 0.5 results in an efficiency of about 40 - 50 %, corresponding to a reduction of about 3-4 dB. The practical result are slightly lower signal reports as with full size dipoles.

The matching elements are housed in weatherproof, balun-like housings. The connectors consist of stainless steel screws and a SO239 coax socket for connecting a 50 Ohm coax cable. A water drip deflector prevents rainwater from entering the coax connector.

The dipoles are supplied with a slight excess length for the lower end of the band. By loosening the box clamps on the end insulator and shortening (bending over) the wire, an optimal shifting of the resonance to higher frequencies (band middle, band end) is possible. The antenna wire consists of flexible steel wire with a colourless plastic sheath. The short dipoles can under some conditions also be used as balcony, room or roof-mounted antennas.

Multiband Dipoles

W3DZZ Antenne

Trap dipoles for multiple bands, with balun, connector SO-239 (PL), max. power 200 or 1000 W SSB/CW.

W3DZZ 80 / 40 m
Slightly shortened trap dipole for the classic bands 80 m and 40 m. Span approx. 34 m. Balun and traps are weatherproof and sealed with plastic. Extremely low weight with high tensile strength due to use of highly flexible steel wire with plastic sheathing. The antenna is completely mounted and equipped with a socket SO239 on the balun for the direct connection of a 50 Ohm coaxial cable.

Short W3DZZ 80 / 40 m
Due to a high L/C ratio of the traps a very strong shortening of the 80 m part is achieved. The inner 40 m dipole remains completely unaffected, so that the broadband capability is guaranteed at 40 m. The inner 40 m dipole is not affected. The shortening on the 80 m band is bought by a lower bandwidth (approx. 110 KHz at SWR < 2). So if you have little space and are content with either the SSB or CW range on 80 m, this short W3DZZ is the best choice. Otherwise, it has the same structure as the conventional W3DZZ with 34 m span. This short version has a total length of 24.80 m and can optimally adjust the resonance point by changing the wire length at the end insulators. Use of tension-resistant steel wire with colourless plastic sheathing and stainless steel connections.

Windom (OCF) Dipole

Windom Antenne

Popular all-band antenna for the harmonic bands (160)/80/40/20/17/12/10 m or 60/30/15 m. Somewhat better bandwidth than a normal dipole, good SWR on all bands. When space is limited this antenna can be installed as a sloper or inverted Vee as well. The antenna is made from plastic coated steel wire. Comes with 1:6 balun, with PL (SO-239) socket. The position of the balun is at approx 1/3 of the overall length.

The windom antennas for 160 to 10m and 80 to 10m can be extended to the 30 and 15m bands by adding two wires.
Length of the wires is 9.5 for the longer part and 4.5m for the shorter side. These additional wires are connected in parallel to the existing wires and should be installed away from the existing dipole. This can be done either downward (inverted Vee style) or perpendicular sideways (cross dipole style).

G5RV Dipole

G5RV Dipol

Very widespread and versatile antennas consisting of a dipole, which is fed via an intermediate piece of parallel wire. At the end of the 450 Ω parallel wire, any length of 50Ω coaxial cable can be connected. The SWR is between 1:1 and 1:4, so a tuner is usually required. The antenna tuners installed in the radios are usually sufficient for the impedance range, so that usually no additional tuner is necessary. On the WARC bands, the antenna can of course also be tuned via a tuner, although higher impedances are to be expected. The antennas can also be mounted bent if space is limited, or the ends of the legs can be angled downwards. The parallel wire should hang freely if possible.

Max. power is 1000 W SSB/CW, ships complete with 450 Ω parallel wire and encapsulated PL-connector or balun, 3mm antenna wire, plastic coated.

The 40-10m G5RV (also the 80-10m version, for those who have enough space) can be used in connection with a fiberglass mast No. 1833x also very well as a 7- (8) band vertical antenna. One leg is led up to the top of the mast. The other 'cold' half of the dipole is braced diagonally to the side as a radial and the parallel wire is braced like a second radial to the other side.

On the models without balun, there is a simple adaptor piece to PL socket at the end of the parallel wire line, so a coaxial cable with PL plug can be connected directly. On the models with balun, this adaptor piece is a 1:1 current balun, i.e. this balun provides for a cleaner symmetry and also serves as a choke.

The ZS6BKW type antenna is a version of the G5RV optimized by Brian Austin G0GSF (ex ZS6BKW). With a detailed analysis of the lengths and the transformation of the parallel wire line we tried to improve the adaptation in most bands. This made both the antenna and the parallel wire a bit shorter and might fit in even more gardens. The better adjustment reduces the need for tuning with the tuner and thus the losses.

G5RV Light Dipole

The G5RV 'light' uses a thinner steel wire as the normal models mentioned above - 2 instead of 3mm. It also uses a lighter and thinner parallel wire with an impedance of 300 Ω. All in all the antenna is lighter, but has also a lower power handling capacity of only 200W. But that should be sufficient for most standard transceivers. The parallel wire of the 'G5RV Light' is slightly longer than required. This is done so you can shorten it to shift the resonance from the lower end of the bands (CW portion) to the higher part (SSB portion).

End-fed long wires

Other than dipoles or windom antennas, end fed long wires are adapted via a 1:10 single-phase balun (aka UNUN, Magnetic Balun). This converts the low-impedance cable impedance to the high-impedance value of the long wire end, which is about 400 - 800 Ω. Minor discrepancies are compensated by an antenna tuner.

Thanks to the feed at the end, this antenna is optically much more inconspicuous and much easier to hang. The suspension can be straight, angled, as an open square or as a vertical L-antenna. The wire length is relatively uncritical. The advantage of broadband is bought by a slightly higher noise than with a dipole of the same length. Power handling 200W.

Zepp (Doublet) Antennen

Today the well proven ZEPP dipoles, also called doublets, are very popular again, because they can be operated quite inexpensively on several bands by means of a parallel wire feed via an antenna tuner. Since they contain no coils, traps or baluns, a high operational safety is guaranteed.

The parallel wire feed can be designed out with any length (but at least λ/4 in relation to the longest wavelength) and any impedance, since it is a tuned feed line. This means that the dipole and paralel wire as a whole are brought into resonance via the tuner.

When selecting the suitable dipole length, one always assumes the maximum available span width or space conditions. If the existing span is smaller than λ/2, the efficiency decreases, but good results can be expected. The shorter dipoles are also excellent as vertical multiband dipoles with good properties as omnidirectional antennas. The dipole can be operated in various configurations, e.g. as an straight dipole, inverted vee, U- or Z-shaped angled, L-shaped or even vertical.

Wire Groundplanes

A wire groundplane is a very nice antenna for a vacation. It works like a conventional GP made from aluminium tubes, except that it can be rolled up. The low weight allows the antenna to be taken with you on a flight or any other journey. The antenna comes with one lambda/4 radial per band. The radiator of multiband models is equipped with traps and a coil, monoband antennas have a coil to shorten the length (height). The radials can be arranged perpendicular to the radiator or at an angle, whatever the local situation allows. If space is available this antenna can also be installed horizontally like a dipole. Because only one side of the dipole is equipped with traps (in case of multinband antennas), the bandwidth of this antenna is slightly larger as with dipoles with traps in both legs.

The antenna is constructed from robust steel braid wire, sheated with clear plastic. 50 Ohm feed with PL (SO239) socket.

Loop Antennas

The Delta-Loop antenna is a full wave loop, the circumference corresponds to λ. If a low angle radiation is desired, the loop is set up vertically, for steep radiation (NVIS) horizontally. The triangular shape with the tip pointing upwards is particularly easy to set up, so that only one tensioning point is required. Hence the name, so the antenna looks like the Greek capital Delta Δ. If there are two anchor points available, the loop can be built up as a triangle with the tip pointing downwards. The gain is given as +3 dBD in the literature. The monoband loops are all equipped with a balun 1:2 / 1 KW CW/SSB and are fed with 50 Ohm coaxial cable.

The position of the balun can be placed at a corner or side of the triangle. The antenna is delivered pre-installed, so that only the 4 insulators have to be fixed with one box clamp each, where you want to fix the corner bracings. The 80m monoband Deltaloop has a circumference of 84 m, which corresponds to a side length of 28 m, and a height of 24.3 m.
